U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA-23) returned home from Washington, D.C. for Thanksgiving recess tonight and the UCSB Campus Democrats were waiting at the Santa Barbara Airport to welcome her home. We thanked her for her courageous vote for health care reform and for standing up for women’s reproductive rights in Congress. Thank you Lois!
John King was announced to be Lou Dobb’s replacement and he is set to go on air early 2010.
Lou Dobbs walked away from $9 million dollars he would have been given if he had worked out the remainder of his contract.
CNN was ‘unlikely’ to renew his contract after the current on expired.
Heres Jon Stewart’s take: The Daily Show
There were paying that man WAY too much money…..
Happy Veteran’s day! I hope you all are having a good day off (or did you have it on Monday?) and thanked a Veteran! We have today off for Remembrance Day in Canada.
11/11 (at 11am) is actually the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that effectively ended World War I.
I dont mean to be disrespectful to the mother country, but for a place that throws around a phrase like ‘support the troops’ at every turn, we kinda fail compared to Canada at this holiday. They have parades and celebrations like in the US, but they take this day surprisingly seriously. Its not just an excuse to get the grill out. Two Mondays ago my professor had a little red plastic flower on his lapel. Ever since then I have seen this flower everywhere and yesterday I would say that 3/4 of people walking around had one. This poppy reflect the remembrance of a battle where Canadians fought in WWII which is now a beautiful poppy field. These poppies are bought all over the country from New Brunswick to BC as donations to Veterans and families of fallen soldiers.
This is a link to a great collection of videos of Veterans returning home to their dogs. Its easy to forget how much dogs love their owners. Click
It is difficult to ‘remember’ something when you weren’t alive when it happened, but nonetheless its important to take the time to think about what happened on 11/11 because, as the saying goes: thoes who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Lest We forget…
OH Happy Day! The most overtly racist man in news is leaving CNN ‘effective immediately’!!! NY TIMES
“’Some leaders in the media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond my role here at CNN and engage in constructive problem-solving,’ Mr. Dobbs said.” Is anyone else afraid of what that means?
“Mr. Dobbs’ contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011. He told viewers that CNN had agreed to release him from his contract early.”
‘Mr. Dobbs informed his staff members of his intentions in a meeting Wednesday afternoon, catching some of the staffers off-guard.’ So much for protecting the working class….
Heres the transcript of his farewell on his show tonight.
The Onion has an inside scoop! ”Lou Dobbs deported after living illegally in the US for 48 years!”
Heres my question: Where’s he ofF tO neXt? Any guesses, anyone? Politics? NGO? We’ll see….
UPDATE: John King will fill Dobbs’ time slot daily starting at the beginning of next year!

OK, so I have to admit that I have been TOTALLY wrong about the price of attending a UC. I thought it was in the 7000/year range (for tuition), but OH NO, that would be nice! If you are not aware of the break down, here it is:
If you ever feel disenfranchised, apathetic, or frustrated with politics, I recommend renting Move On: The Movie. It follows MoveOn.org through the major political events starting with the Clinton ‘incident’ to the 2008 election. After I saw it I was ready to go knock on some doors! It also does a good job of letting you relive the 2008 election night, which I think makes us all feel warm inside.

The US House passed the healthcare reform bill 220 to 215. It costs $1.1 Trillion dollars over 10 years and will cover the 36 million Americans currently without healthcare.
The major concession was coverage of abortions but Democrats hope to add an amendment in the Senate. One Republican voted for the bill (Anh Cao, Louisiana) and 39 Democrats opposed it. NY TIMES
Now we wait to see what happens in the Senate….

Happy November! I hope you’ve recovered from this past weekend’s wild festivities and are ready for the month ahead. We will be meeting in a DIFFERENT LOCATION this week on the 3rd Floor of the Student Resource Building (SRB) at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow, we’ll post up signs to help you find it. We will be devoting a significant portion of the meeting to our caucuses and holding elections, so make sure to come if you’re interested in leading one of our caucuses!
Also, we are pleased to announce that we have our new website and blog up and running! Our Webmaster Geoffrey worked hard to make it happen and our Political Director Kristen has been blogging away. Also, if you haven’t gotten a chance to do so already, make sure to become a fan of the California College Democrats on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/cacollegedems
Finally, tomorrow is election day in Santa Barbara and there are several very important and close races for Mayor and City Council. If we want the Democrats to win we need to get volunteers our there to Get Out The Vote throughout the day tomorrow. Starting at 5:00 a.m. we will have carpools leaving from Ryan’s house at 807 Embarcadero Del Norte Apt. 3 and heading to Democratic Headquarters and they will be going back and forth all day so you can get back for your classes. If you can’t make it out or can’t miss class, there will also be phonebanks set up in Isla Vista for you to help out between classes. Call Patrick for more info about phonebanking: 818-612-1022. Then after polls close at 8:00 p.m. there will be an election night party hosted by the Santa Barbara County Young Democrats and we will be carpooling people who volunteer tomorrow to the party.
